Home

Home is an installation created by Earline using wood, newspaper, tape, metal, sand, film, found objects. Johnson creates her version of the Hydrothermal vent ecosystem found on the deep sea ocean floor. The vents are similar to hot springs shooting out  heated water and giving nutrients to deep sea creatures. Johnson decided to create an immersive experience of the Hydrothermal vents as she found herself living in a situation where she felt lost and surrounded by darkness. Only the strong can survive to find resources in the extreme depths of the ocean surrounded by darkness. Johnson was a deep sea vent octopus in an extreme habitat.

Fabricating the Vents

Johnson assembled the vents by first creating a base with a woodblock and metal rods. The base was then covered with newspaper and tape to create a bumpy/rock texture. Finally Johnson coated the structures with plaster which would serve as foundation to apply color. The vents ranged in height between 2ft and 5ft.

Adding Color

After the plaster was applied, Johnson decided to use spray paint on the vents.  Hydrothermal vents tend to be on the dake side when it comes to color but Earline decided to add hints of bright coloration to show off the vents in what was set to be a dark room.

Installing the Components

After completing the vents, Ealine begins the rest of the installation on location. She started by hanging black sheets to mimic the darkness of the deep sea. Johnson splattered white paint over all the sheets as a representation of marine snow known to be falling constantly in the deep depths of the ocean. She created a projection of marine snow falling on a loop as well. Johnson also added sand, dirt, & sea animals to complete her Hydrothermal vent ecosystem.
