Neighborhood Markers Community Mural

Neighborhood Markers community mural is a project Earline worked on for the City of Norfolk. The mural is 250 ft by 15 ft located on the CHKD Thrift Store in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. The mural concept was made with the help of members from the community as well as PB Young Elementary School. Johnson and her group created a system in which the city of Norfolk was welcomed to help take part in this special project.

Prepping the Design

This mural was created using a Pellon. Which is a non-woven synthetic material perfect for painting a mural in doors! The Pellon was cut into 5ft by 5ft squares and prepped with primer.

Drawing the Design

After canvassing the community and having the students at PB Young Elementary submit ideas for a mural a design was created using the creative cloud. Using exact measurements of the CHKD wall Johnson and her team were able to use a projector and map out the design on the Pellon.

Painting with the Community

With the design drawn out, a color was assigned to every section of the Pellon. This allowed for the mural to be created on a paint by numbers system. This system allowed the community to be invited to help create the final product and leave their mark.

Installing the Mural

After each 5ft by 5ft square was completed Earline and the other lead artists inspected each section to establish an overall clean cohesive look. The Pellon squares were then installed onto the CHKD wall where touch ups could be completed.
